There are a variety of guitar playing techniques that are associated with surf including bending notes downward with the whammy bar and tremolo picking. It was also one of the first Pop music styles to incorporate the use of electric bass. Through use of these techniques, the reverb, and later, beach-themed lyrics, performers sought to capture the essence of surfing in musical form. Named after the sport with which it became so closely associated, Surf rock is typified by reverb-effected electric guitar, three-chord song structures, rolling drum fills, and vocal harmonies.
