Sistrum
A sacred, ancient Egyptian instrument consisting of a metal frame with transverse metal rods that rattle when the instrument is shaken. Similar in sound, though definitely not in appearance, to the tambourine. Still used today as a liturgical instrument in the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.
