Jazz     AV     Wide-ranging genre characterized by the use of swung rhythms, blue notes, polyrhythms, and particularly, extensive improvisation. It incorporates a wide range of influences, from blues, ragtime, and classical music (particularly that of Impressionist composers such as Debussy), to spirituals and West African cultural and musical traditions. It first emerged as the Dixieland style of music among the African-American communities of New Orleans in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Throughout the 20th century, it developed stylistically across the entire United States, from Kansas City to New York City.

Jump-Blues     AV     An up-tempo style of blues, usually played by small groups and featuring saxophone or brass instruments. It was popular in the 1940s and was a precursor of rhythm and blues and rock and roll.

Jungle     AV     Uptempo (i.e. 150-170 BPM), pointed, syncopated, and minimal. Typically comprised of fast and frantic breakbeats, particularly the 'Amen break' - and frequently defined by a lively, high-pass filtered, syncopated hi-hat and snare beat. Breakbeats are varied by filtering and splicing over the course of a track's development, and are often paired with a slower, syncopated, sine-wave reggae dub/dancehall influenced bass line (i.e. a tuned 808 kick) rhythmically matched with a kick drum (i.e. often a punchy, filtered acoustic kick drum sample). Emerged in urban England in the 1990s. Generally acknowledged to be the predecessor of drum n bass. The frequent use of ragga and reggae vocals and jungle's tendency towards traditional groove-oriented breakbeats differentiates it from drum n bass.
