GregorianChant
Most significant tradition of Western plainchant. It is a monophonic, entirely vocal, sacred from of music developed for use in the Roman Catholic Church. Neumes, an early form of musical notation that showed general direction of a melodic line, were developed to jog the memories of Gregorian Chant singers. Recitatives are largely syllable repeated over a single note, or reciting tone, with infrequent appearance of other pitches, whereas free melodies are freer and consist of a great variety of pitches.
