Calliope
Airy-sounding instrument which produces sound by sending steam or compressed air through large whistles. Often extremely loud, and there is no way to vary tone or loudness. Variants exist which can be controlled mechanically, by keyboard, and more recently, by MIDI. When steam power was commonly used, the Calliope was often used on riverboats and in circuses. It was originally patented by the American inventor Joshua C. Stoddard in 1855.
