Sackbut |
An early kind of trombone that was in use primarily in the Renaissance and Baroque eras. It evolved from the slide trumpet, but unlike that instrument, it has a U-shaped slide with two parallel sliding tubes, which extends the range of the instrument down. Compared to modern trombones, the sackbut had a smaller, more cylindrically-proportioned bore and a less flared bell. It could play softly more easily than modern trombones. |
