Sub-Saharan traditional music is characterized by extensive use of percussion, complex polyrhythms, and frequent use of improvisation and call & response. North African music is closely tied to Middle Eastern music. There are a wide variety of distinct traditional music styles in Africa, mostly relying on oral tradition. West African music in particular has had a major influence on modern popular music.
